Yea it did get interesting. I was camped at GS1 when it hit. That Sunday turned out nice. Hiked up Pine canyon for a first day warm-up. Followed that by a short trek up Hayes ridge just to soak up the view.
Mondays trip into Juniper canyon was damp cold and clamy. Camped Monday night at Glen Springs with a steady rain. Woke up Tuesday morning with fast-freezing rain and 1/2 to 1" of ice on the front and drivers side of my truck. Had a heck of a time folding up my frozen tarp that I use as a tent.
Called headquarters for a weather update and was told it would get a lot worse real soon and would be the same all week. I decided to cut my losses and headed out. Nothing like having a good four wheel drive when you need it. After a slow, slippery sliding drive out I was glad to find the main road hadn't iced over yet. Only has about 1" if crunchy sleet on top. I turned tail and headed home as fast as the road would allow.
This was the first time in 14 years of camping at the park that I was glad to be leaving and going home.
Wow! almost 3" of rain in the park in January. I hope this is an indicator of a wet year. Might make for an interesting spring bloom.
On the way home I just made it to Del Rio when they closed hwy 90 west. Then I just made it through San Antonio when they started closing all the freeways. Sure was glad to see the flat Gulf coast again. What a trip!
